1. Create a game plan. Weight loss plans can’t be like cooked spaghetti - you can’t just toss it
against the wall and see if it sticks. It is vital to create a plan of success that works for you.
Start by looking at your previous attempts. What worked last time? What didn’t? What could
you try differently? Take these elements to structure your game plan, remembering that it
might look different from someone else (because you are unique!)
2. Create your successful environment. Does your plan include no sweets? Then get all of
those cookies out of the cupboard! Daily walks? Invest in good walking shoes! Set up your
environment and your life so that it will be easy to be successful at reaching your goals.
3. Assemble your support team. Identify the people that could be helpful in your weight loss
journey. Who can you call when you’re feeling discouraged or unsuccessful, or who will
squeal with you when you reach your goals? Solid support could be your key to success.
4. Plan for failure. This one might seem counterintuitive, but research shows that everyone
attempting life changes (like weight loss) has multiple slip-ups, and the first is usually the
biggest. Rather than trying to avoid it, come up with a plan of reaction to be prepared. Is it
going to be hitting a mental “reset button” the next morning? Or maybe it’s taking time to
look in the mirror and give yourself reassuring affirmations until you feel ready to start again.
5. Build your confidence. Weight loss attempts are guaranteed to take a toll on your self esteem.
Be prepared for the mental and emotional roller coaster by building yourself up to a
good starting place. Do things that make you happy - practice talents, buy cute shoes,
practice morning meditation - and plan to do these things regularly throughout this process.
Remember that your well-being is more important than any number on a scale.
